METSO SUPPLIES TMP PULPING LINES TO STORA ENSO'S VARKAUS AND PORT HAWKESBURY MILLS

Metso Paper will supply TMP (thermomechanical pulp) pulping lines to Stora Enso's Varkaus and Port Hawkesbury mills. The start-up of the Varkaus' new line in Finland will be in June 2004. The new line at the Port Hawkesbury mill in Nova Scotia, Canada, will be started up in September 2004.

The new TMP pulping line at the Varkaus mill will replace the current groundwood plant. The delivery will include all main process technology, with the installation begining in November 2003. The maximum capacity of the new line will be 650-700 tons per day. The new TMP line will feed the two paper machines of the Varkaus mill, which manufacture newsprint and directory paper.

Metso Paper will also supply all main process technology for the new TMP pulping line to Stora Enso's Port Hawkesbury mill, where the new line will replace the current stone groundwood and high-yield sulphite plants. The installations will begin in January 2004. The maximum capacity of the new line will be 880 tons per day. Metso Automation will supply a DCS control system for the line. The new TMP line will mainly feed the newsprint machine of the Port Hawkesbury mill.

The thermomechanical pulping method is a pulping process, where wood fibers are separated by means of mechanical force. Thermomechanical pulp is most commonly used in the production of wood-containing printing papers. Its lower than kraft pulp production cost and good technical printing properties make it especially well-suited for this use.
