An America Now Gone -- New novel depicts the changes within a young man as the world transforms around him

CRESTLINE, Calif., April 2, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Though such life altering events as the Industrial Revolution took place over decades, even centuries, World War II changed the world in a period of only seven years, author Clay Noia states. In his new book, entitled A Season of War (now available through 1stBooks Library), Noia presents a touching story following the life and struggles of Jacky Barnes, a teenage boy growing up during this tumultuous time of war.

Set in southwestern Connecticut, A Season of War is presented through Jacky's eyes, as he and his friends, Cootie and Butch Jarvis, pursue adventure and fight more than their share of typical youthful battles. Not the average teenage trio, the three boys find themselves caught in a precarious moral decision, after Butch and Jacky witness a high school arson, plotted and executed by the ruthless gang leader, Cottonmouth. To make matters worse, their older friend, Tom Mack, an educated, but ostracized Native American, is accused of the crime. Before Butch can speak up, he receives a gang beating that breaks his spirit and strength.

Alone in his mission to clear Tom's name, Jacky turns to Lacey, a beautiful, older girl, who becomes his guide, and his friend, Cootie, whose observations about Cottonmouth enable Jacky to finally understand what he must do. With their help, Jacky ultimately resolves the conflict with Cottonmouth and frees Tom, while maintaining his honor and dignity.

Sporting surprising twists and turns, A Season of War offers a cast rich in depth and provides a sense of life in an America that changed before their very eyes and no longer exists.

Though he grew up in Ansonia, Conn., Noia now resides with his wife, Pegi, in Crestline, Calif. He served two years as a 1st lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. and received a master's degree at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. Noia then taught English in the college preparatory schools of Flintridge Preparatory School in Pasadena, Calif. and Lake Ridge Academy in North Ridgeville, Ohio. Noia became headmaster of both schools. He currently teaches at the Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School in Lake Arrowhead, Calif.

In addition to A Season of War, Noia has written A Dream Dying, the sequel, and a naval memoir, entitled Blue Water Sailor.
