WHAT: June 19 is the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Lou Gehrig,
the New York Yankee Hall of Famer who died of amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
During the last decade, researchers have made significant
advances in learning more about this progressive
neurodegenerative disease that claims some 5,600 lives in the
United States each year.
Schilling, who named his son Gehrig after the Yankee slugger,
is one of the nation's leading figure's in the fight against
ALS through fundraising efforts and public awareness
activities.
