Learning to Cope from Other's Experiences: Author recounts harrowing experience of caring for mother with dementia

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Sept. 4, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- When a family faces a difficult time, it is often helpful to seek out other people's stories and learn from their experiences. With the average age of America's population steadily rising, thousands of families now have loved ones suffering with the mental incapacities of dementia. In his new book, Dementia: A Journey Through a Different Life (now available through 1stBooks), author Stewart Nosky recounts how he and his wife led his mother through the stages of the disease until her death.

Dementia is not a technical book on disease, but is a personal story based on one woman's life and struggle. Meant as a guide for children, spouses and friends of those dealing with dementia, the book details the hurdles Nosky overcame to ensure his mother received adequate care.

He outlines the subtle symptoms of the disease and discusses the best way to choose a care provider and how to work with them. Nosky poured his experiences into this book, offering not only a detailed story of his mother's care and living arrangements, but also the emotional difficulties that often accompany caring for someone with dementia.

Although every patient is different, the stories others told of their sick loved ones often shared striking similarities. Tragedy is generally impossible to prepare for; however, Nosky hopes his book sheds light on the harrowing ordeal of caring for a demented loved one. He offers the knowledge he's gathered in the hopes it will help those in similar situations down this arduous path.

Nosky is a technical writer of cost engineering and cost scheduling manuals. He and his wife currently reside in Huntsville, Ala.
