White Light Through the Gray -- New Novel Explores an Alcoholic's Life, Haunted by Past Demons and Mental Anguish

PALMDALE, Calif., Sept. 17, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Alcoholism affects millions of Americans. Many drink to fight depression, some, to drown the voices of mental illness. In David Crutchfield's case, it may be both. In the new novel, White Light Through the Gray (now available through 1stBooks), author W.R. Beauhuld explores an alcoholic's world.

Beauhuld follows David, a hallucinating alcoholic, who is struggling with his sanity after the recent loss of his sister. A deeply embedded guilt complex from his childhood has given shape and a voice to hallucinations. He believes this manifestation is a demonic ghost. Fearing the ghost, yet attracted to its possibilities, David drinks even more to escape and animate the "demon."

Living in a deteriorating house left to him by his deceased parents, David does work and, as the owner of two apartment complexes, has plenty of money and time to do as he pleases. Consequently, he spends much of his time wallowing in depression. Hearing strange noises from the decrepit home, Mr. Mundeen, David's elderly neighbor, fears the young man is becoming unstable. Knowing of David's troubled childhood, the old man re-establishes a close relationship with David, inciting him to recall painful memories. His girlfriend, Kelly, and best friend, James, also bring back buried memories, unintentionally expounding David's mental difficulties.

Between Las Vegas, Los Angeles and the Pacific shoreline, David meets a host of interesting characters that ultimately guide him toward a life-altering decision.

White Light Through Gray is an emotional foray into an alcoholic's world, haunted by guilt, tragedy and ghosts from the past.

Born in Los Angeles, Beauhuld developed an interest in writing at nine. He began writing his first novel at 25, quitting when his sister died. Years later, encouraged by his wife, Beauhuld left his prominent computer job and took up the pen. White Light Through Gray is his first book.
