MEDIA ADVISORY, Oct. 7, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) --
NEWS CONFERENCE: Wednesday, October 8, 10:00 a.m. PT WHO: U.S. Senator Harry Reid will unveil two sets of new renewable energy resource maps at the Western States Renewable Energy Summit. Participants from 19 states are attending the summit, with an expected total attendance of 225. Representatives of the wind, solar, geothermal and biomass industries, along with elected officials, policy makers, business leaders, utility representatives, the Air Force, Navy and Department of Defense among many others will be attending the event. WHAT: Senator Reid will unveil a series of maps: Nevada's new meso-scale wind resource map (a higher resolution than previously available). The map is a joint product of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Nevada State Office of Energy and shows, in detail, where the wind resources exist in the state for possible economic development. The Senator will also unveil the new geothermal resource maps that show low- to moderate- and high-temperature geothermal energy resource locations in 13 western states, including Nevada. These maps reveal a world of geothermal development opportunities that literally exist just beneath our feet. Public and private investors and others will find the maps to be excellent development tools. The objective of the Western States Renewable Energy Summit is to convene western state policy makers and leaders, industry representatives, developers / owners of projects, utilities, tribal leaders, regulators and advocates in a forum to determine how the western states may become a more positive force through aggregation and organization in the development of energy policy at both the regional and national levels. A non-technical poster session highlighting the University and Community College System of Nevada and National Renewable Energy Laboratory collaborative partnerships in Nevada will be held to demonstrate new works and studies. WHERE: The Atlantis Casino Resort, 3800 South Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada WHEN: Wednesday, October 8, 2003, 10:00 to 10:15 a.m. PT WHY: Nevada, and the western states in general, are home to vast quantities of renewable resources, which could be used to generate energy and economic opportunity for urban and rural areas alike. The summit is an opportunity for media to interview top policy makers and experts from across the country -- and across disciplines -- and get the latest on renewables.
