LOS ANGELES, Nov. 5, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Many people attend church, pray, devoutly believe in God, but have trouble understanding the Bible. Biblical words and phrases often make it difficult to fully grasp the meaning behind God's word. Gloria Thomas-Watkins has written her new book, Definitions of Common Words and Phrases in the King James Bible (now available through 1stBooks), to aid Bible readers.
With her book, the author takes the headache out of comprehending Bible verses by defining words and phrases. With children in mind, she made Definitions of Common Words and Phrases simple and thorough by translating old English into modern terms.
For instance, she translates Jeremiah 10:8 from "But they are altogether brutish, and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities" to "But they are totally mean, and careless: the proof is a teaching of worthlessness." She redefines phrases and words to exhibit their intended meaning. For example, she defines "shepherd" as "protector/supplier" and "the valley of the shadow of death" as "the low places of trouble, sickness, debt and poverty."
In addition, Thomas-Watkins covers the idea and meaning of faith. According to her, faith is not just a belief, but a "word of action." She also lists the common abbreviations for the books of the Bible, the meanings of each name and the authors of each book. The book also includes discussions about the various meanings and origins of the book of Psalms.
"There were so many words and phrases in the King James Bible that were undefined or not clear, or did not make sense in the context of the verse. Many blessings are hidden in these verses," Thomas-Watkins writes.
Definitions of Common Words and Phrases in the King James Bible reveals those blessings and helps today's churchgoers finally understand God's word.
Thomas-Watkins is a college graduate, a member of Crenshaw Christian Center-West and a mother of three. Definitions of Common Words and Phrases in the King James Bible is her first book.
