Nokia provides a TETRA network to Ningqi Railway in China

Nokia has been chosen to provide Ningqi Railway Co., Ltd. with a digital TETRA professional mobile radio network for its new rail line between the cities of Nanjing and Qidong in Jiangsu province.  Nokia and Shanghai Railway Communication Equipment Factory, the system integrator for the project, will jointly construct the TETRA network and provide applications for Ningqi Railway Co., Ltd.

Network deliveries have already started, and the entire network will be put into operation in June 2004.

"Nokia's digital TETRA professional mobile radio system has innovative mobile communication functions that meet the needs of railway operators.  It is the most cost-effective solution," says Mr. Miu Weizhong, Head of Shanghai Railway Communication Equipment Factory.

As the system supplier, Nokia will provide Ningqi railway Co., Ltd. with the end-to-end network solution, new Nokia THR880 handheld and TMR880 mobile terminals, as well as training and technical support.  The deal includes the Nokia DXTip exchange, which enables the core network to use an IP-based backbone to connect different Nokia TETRA network elements.

"We are pleased to provide our advanced TETRA system for the benefit of Ningqi Railway.  Nokia's TETRA system is fast and reliable and will help Ningqi Railway handle its demanding communication needs safely, reliably, and comfortably," says Topi Kinnunen, Director of Professional Mobile Radio Asia Pacific and Greater China, Nokia.

As the system integrator, Shanghai Railway Communication Equipment Factory will cooperate with Nokia to develop applications for the customer's system.  Cooperation between the two companies will also benefit the further development of the wireless communication market for the railway industry in China.
