MEDIA ADVISORY, Feb. 3, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) --
WHAT: The Association for Women in Technology, Southern California (AWT), a local non-profit organization dedicated to serving the advancement of women and girls in all fields of technology, will host a booth for members of the Girl Scout Council of Orange County at the "From Dreams to Reality" event at Concordia University in Irvine. The event will give Cadette Girl Scouts the opportunity to explore careers and think about the future. By attending a wide variety of career stations, participating in workshops and interviewing professionals in occupations that interest them, the girls will learn what kind of training they need to succeed in certain fields. AWT has hosted a series of Girl Scout workshops since last summer, allowing the girls to complete various requirements to earn Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior recognitions while learning about technology and various careers in technical fields. These Girl Scout workshops run monthly through the end of 2004. One notable career counselor attending the event on behalf of AWT is Stacy Nelson, a software quality consultant for NASA specializing in software verification and validation. She was recently selected from 125,000 executives by the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE) to be featured in the fall issue of "Executive Female" magazine for her excellence in technical consulting at NASA and other projects. Through her company, Nelson Consulting, Stacy has provided innovative technology for PG&E, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Rush St. Lukes' Presbyterian Medical Center, Hitachi, Chevron, Microsoft, Bellagio and other companies. She received commendations for technical excellence from NASA for verification and validation of space vehicle diagnostic systems and the Intelligent Flight Control System for the F-15. She is currently working on the Mars Science Laboratory and the Autonomous Rotorcraft Project. This event is for Cadette Girl Scouts. Senior Girl Scouts may work as staff. Attending this event will allow Cadettes to earn the From Dreams to Reality Patch and complete the prerequisite for the Girl Scout Silver Award. This event is a real "working" opportunity, and participants should plan to take notes and ask questions. Girl Scout uniforms or business dress is required, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. To register a Cadette for this workshop, please call Lesley Finch, Program Specialist for the Girl Scout Council of Orange County, at 714-979-7900 ext. 318 or email LFinch@gscoc.org. To help as an AWT Girl Scout Workshop volunteer, please contact Cynthia Cotteta, AWT President at 949-496-1200 or email cynthia@awtsocal.org. WHO: As a dynamic forum for networking and learning opportunities, AWT bridges the gap between industry, education and community institutions and continues to strengthen the fabric of our Southern California technology region. AWT holds meetings and events every month, attracting women in every area of technology, from those just entering the field to senior level management and technology innovators.
