Nokia to demonstrate the newest innovations on open, standards-based platforms

February 23, 2004, 3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France - The strong value proposition of the Series 60 smart phone platform was reinforced at Cannes with a series of announcements from Nokia demonstrating the latest developments in the open-standards platforms.

"We are dedicated to supporting the overall vision "Life Goes Mobile" through our commitment to easy-to-use, ubiquitous and dependable smart phone platform extending mobility across Internet, media, enterprise and home domains," said Pertti Korhonen, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia. "The continued success of Series 60 will benefit the entire mobile industry through its implementation of open interfaces and middleware as defined by industry forums and standards including 3GPP, OMA, W3C, IETF and JCP. This will enable the whole industry to leverage a feature-rich and interoperable multifunctional platform on which to create innovative, exciting services and applications for consumers and enterprises."

As evidence of the growing use of the Series 60 smart phone platform, Nokia today announced the addition of Legend Holdings Limited (Lenovo), the leading IT corporation and mobile handset manufacturer in China, as a new licensee of the Series 60 Platform. Lenovo chose the Series 60 Platform because the open and industry interoperable platform best supports their innovations and differentiates their offering in the very competitive Chinese handset market. Nokia worked closely with Lenovo in developing the Series 60 Platform to meet their highly specific market needs and to ensure fast time-to-market. Lenovo will license Series 60 based on the new Series 60 Complete Design Model offered to mobile handset manufacturers.

The Series 60 Complete Design Model, a complementary licensing and development model for smart phones based on Series 60, was unveiled today to improve time-to-market and to enable a generic platform to be used also for market segments with highly specific requirements. The model can further extend the use of Series 60 Platform to handset manufacturers that target segments which have not been easily accessible before. The Series 60 Complete Design Model is a combined effort of the Series 60 Product Creation Community covering reference implementations from Motorola and Texas Instruments, and complete phone designs from the first Series 60 Boutiques: Elektrobit Group PLC and Teleca PLC.

Supporting the development of attractive applications and differentiated operator services, Nokia today also launched the Forum Nokia PRO developer program. The Forum Nokia PRO developer program is a subscription-based service that delivers premium levels of technical, business development and marketing support for the development of wireless applications and services to advanced developer companies worldwide. The program provides more direct access to Nokia's developer support services and is the most resource-intensive developer offering from Nokia to date. Subscribing companies will receive a developer kit for each year of membership, including a Nokia device, a developer book, SDKs and other membership items related to creating applications on Nokia Developer Platforms.

Further developer backing was demonstrated by the announcement about a joint project by Nokia and Addison-Wesley Professional, the leading publisher of technical books for professionals. The two companies will publish a mobile developer book series focusing on application development guidelines, tools, and best practices using Nokia's software platforms for mobile developers.

Highlighting the power and continued importance of open standards, Nokia also announced the successful completion of pilots with Orange and Vodafone, featuring single sign-on for mobile devices, a technology eliminating the need for multiple entering of user authentication credentials when accessing different services. In addition, Nokia is working with America Online Inc., to trial a prototype Nokia mobile device offering Radio@AOL, a leading online radio service. All these service pilots are based on Liberty Alliance Project specifications, a group committed to developing open, interoperable specifications for network identity.

Furthermore, www.series60.com is a new website offering a quick way to find the latest news and information about the Series 60 Platform. Launched and created by Nokia and the Series 60 licensees, the site serves as the main portal for a wide variety of Series 60 Platform information for all key stakeholders. The website includes six main sections: Terminal Manufacturers, Operators, Enterprises, Product Creation Community, Developers and Devices.

Series 60 Platform is showcased at 3GSM World Congress in Hall 4, K23, Palais des Festivals.
