Tales of a Quick Learner -- New Novel Follows Exploits of 12-Year-Old Boy

ATHENS, Ga., March 5, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Everything in Jimmy Merritt's life is changing. With a new town, new friends, a new school, he grows up fast. Herb Meyer presents a coming-of-age novel; Slow, Slow - Quick, Quick (now available through 1stBooks), about a young boy learning how to live in the complicated adult world.

Set in 1952, Slow, Slow - Quick, Quick follows the exploits of 12-year-old Jimmy as he starts over in a new town. It is the summer before sixth grade and Jimmy wastes no time making friends in his new surroundings. Bouie, ML and Jimmy quickly become inseparable as they face life's challenges head on. They build a soapbox car, hunt with BB guns, play sports and get into a number of tussles. Their innocence slowly gives way as they ponder life's great mysteries, such as girls, sex, parents and disappointment.

Jimmy's kindness, imagination and adventurous personality make him easily likeable. His best friend, Bouie, is an intellectual and an industrious boy with his own motorbike and paper route, while Jimmy's neighbor, ML, is impulsive and daring. However, Jimmy becomes smitten by DeeDee Rose, who is smart, pretty and the best runner he has ever seen. Just as he has experienced the initial highs of first love, he experiences the pangs of longing as older boys move into their circle. Jimmy and his friends must learn to navigate this new social world and fight for attention as they learn what it means to be an adult.

Filled with the fun and bumps of growing up, Slow Slow - Quick, Quick is a coming-of-age novel that tackles the complexities of growing up in the simplicity of 1950s small town America.

Meyer taught high school for 40 years in Atlanta, Dallas and Athens, Ga. A graduate of Emory University, he holds a master's degree in English from the Breadloaf School of English at Middlebury College. During his career, he also coached baseball, golf and soccer and directed school plays. Now retired, he focuses on his other hobbies, such as writing, golf and music. He is a coauthor of Education as a Task: Media as a Challenge (Bertelsmann), but Slow, Slow - Quick, Quick is his first work of fiction.
