Emulex HBAs and Embedded Storage Switches Help Fujitsu Establish New Performance Record in SPC-1 Benchmark Test

Fujitsu ETERNUS 6000 Model 800 Storage System Tops SPC-1 I/O Performance Charts with InSpeed Technology-based Switched Back-end Architecture and LightPulse HBAs

COSTA MESA, Calif., March 22, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the market leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) and a leading supplier of intelligent building blocks for next generation storage networking systems, today announced that Fujitsu's ETERNUS 6000 Model 800 Storage System, which uses Emulex's HBA and Embedded Storage Switch products, had achieved a new performance record in recently released benchmark test results from the Storage Performance Council (SPC). The new record SPC-1 IOPS(tm) rate for ETERNUS 6000 model 800 follows a previous record setting SPC-1 benchmark performance by Fujitsu's mid-range enterprise solution, announced in September of 2003, which also employed an Emulex InSpeed(tm)-based switched back end architecture and its LightPulse(tm) Fibre Channel HBAs.

The Fujitsu ETERNUS 6000 Model 800 is an enterprise level storage solution designed and optimized for large-scale, mission critical enterprise applications. Emulex's LightPulse LP9802 PCI-X HBAs, which feature a unique firmware based architecture for long term investment protection and easy upgrades, were used in the test as was Emulex's InSpeed technology. The Emulex InSpeed SOC technology was employed in an SBOD(tm) (Switched Bunch Of Disks) application, providing high performance switched connectivity within the drive drawers to each individual drive. Creating a switched back-end architecture using InSpeed in an SBOD configuration provides drive isolation and enhances the performance and RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) characteristics of storage solutions.

"Fujitsu is pleased to report another record setting performance for its ETERNUS product line and to acknowledge the role of Emulex's connectivity solutions in this achievement," said Mr. Koichi Ueda, General Manager, Storage Systems Development Division, Storage Systems Group, Fujitsu Limited. "The ETERNUS 6000 Series' many advanced capabilities include the ability to scale to over a thousand drives without performance loss, up to 15 disk drives per drive enclosure, and self diagnostic capabilities that enable drive exchange before the system is adversely affected. Emulex's products meet Fujitsu's high standards for reliability performance, and we look forward to continued partnership efforts to bring industry leading solutions to market."

Mike Smith, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for Emulex, said, "Fujitsu's use of both our LightPulse HBAs and InSpeed embedded storage switches in the same record setting benchmark test from a highly respected organization such as the Storage Performance Council further validates our commitment to delivering best-in-class connectivity solutions. Additionally, the combination of Emulex HBAs and InSpeed provides compelling performance advantages, and reinforces the high value proposition associated with Emulex's products, as does the use of our solutions by an industry leader like Fujitsu."

About the Storage Performance Council's SPC-1 Benchmark Performance Test

The SPC-1 Benchmark is a sophisticated test suite emulating real user environments provided by the Storage Performance Council (SPC). During recently published SPC-1 Benchmark test results, the ETERNUS 6000 Model 800 produced an SPC-1 IOPS(tm) rate of 69,241.73 and an SPC-1 Price-Performance value of $11.99 at an ASU Capacity of 7,967.078 GB with an SPC-1 LRT(tm) value of 1.85 ms. These results used a data protection level of Mirroring and received SPC Audit Certification Identifier A00025.
