CARLETON, Mich., June 16, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- K-9 Detection, a specialized security company that provides highly trained canines for black mold, drug, and bomb detection, today announced the completion of its operational setup and is now fully equipped for business, including the addition of specially trained dogs, staff, a new facility, and a new web site, http://www.k-9-detection.com.
As a new business, K-9 Detection has been providing services since May 1, 2004, but is now settled into its permanent location with a staff led by canine expert L.D. "Mac" MacDonald. MacDonald is a 27-year veteran of the Michigan State Police with vast experience and certifications as a canine handler and trainer.
K-9 Detection provides highly trained detection dogs that detect a variety of dangerous substances such as black mold, illegal drugs, bombs, and other explosives. The dogs are used in a wide range of situations, from detecting toxic black mold in homes, to finding illegal drugs in schools, homes, or workplaces, to pinpointing explosives in corporate locations or performing bomb sweeps for special events or high-profile meetings.
"There are only about 90 mold dogs in the United States, and we have one of them," said Terry Hall, Owner of K-9 Detection. "40% of the homes in Michigan are contaminated with toxic black mold, including my own house. It can make you and your family very, very sick and you wouldn't even know why. These dogs find it even if it has been painted over or is hidden under a tub or sink."
Recently, Hall, a local reporter, and a local realtor took a mold detection dog to three homes listed for sale. The dog found black mold in two of the homes, and the other one was "clean." The result was published as a feature story in the Monroe Evening News on Sunday, May 30, 2004.
"Black mold is getting more attention in the press as people become more aware of how dangerous it is," said Hall. "ABC's Extreme Makeover show had an episode where a special hazardous materials team removed a lot of the home's interior because it was contaminated with black mold and was making one of the kids sick. The kid had been in the hospital more than 20 times."
The Detroit News ran a story on April 4, 2004 about a Canton, MI, family who moved out of their new home because the black mold contamination was making the family sick. After moving into a temporary rental home, their Canton home is likely to end up in foreclosure since the family cannot afford both rent and a mortgage.
"Insurance companies often don't cover damage from black mold, so you have to cover the clean up costs on your own," said Hall. "So if you buy a house, discover it has black mold, can't afford to make the costly repairs, and you can't sell it, what are you supposed to do?"
