BP awards contract for delivery of Clean Gasoline Project to Aker Kvaerner

Aker Kvaerner Australia Managing Director, Mr Tom Quinn, said, "BP's decision to award Aker Kvaerner the engineering, procurement and construction management contract is recognition of our ability to deliver across all facets of building a project, including health safety and the environment where our cultures are very closely aligned."

Aker Kvaerner Australia will be responsible for overall project management, detailed engineering, procurement of equipment and bulk materials plus construction management of the project. The main execution phase of the project commenced in June 2004, with the project scheduled to produce on specification product by September 2005. The project must be operational in time to provide the new product at the point of sale by 1 January 2006.

BP and Aker Kvaerner Australia have a long history of implementing successful projects together at both of BP's refineries in Australia.

Tom Quinn continued, "Aker Kvaerner is now responsible for the majority of the clean fuels projects being undertaken by Australia's major oil refiners. We are currently engaged in four refineries across four states."

The BP Bulwer Island Clean Gasoline project is on track to comply with new Australian Government regulations covering motor spirit product specifications. The changes involve lowering the level of benzene, which is present in small quantities as a by-product of the fuel production process. Preliminary engineering has been undertaken by BP and the French process technology company Axens.
