The Western European ready-meals market continues to grow at good speed. Stora Enso Consumer Boards is confident that its share of ready-meals packaging materials will also grow substantially now that the versatile, environmentally friendly board-based ovenproof trays have become a hit among European manufacturers.
Stora Enso Consumer Boards has experienced a major surge in demand for its Trayforma boards, which are used in ready-meals packaging. Trayforma is a versatile board and ideal for all kinds of chilled, frozen or fresh foods. Board trays made from Trayforma can be heated up in microwave or conventional ovens. "Trayforma can help companies to successfully build new brands and make a big difference in the marketplace. With a recyclable packaging material that is made from renewable raw materials, food industry is also able to meet current ecological challenges," says Seppo Kiiski, Vice President of Food Service Boards at Stora Enso.
The Trayforma message has been well received in the European trays and molds market. This is also the case in Italy, where the country's leading food wraps manufacturer, Comital Cofresco, has included a new range of board trays in its product line and invested in board tray manufacturing machines.
Good printing properties enable ideal display
Comital Cofresco, a part of the Saiag Group, has divided its tray business into two areas: consumer products and professional products. The Domopak and Cuki brands sold in supermarkets are well-known household brands in Italy, and the company is successfully using Trayforma board for these microwaveable tray brands. "Board-based trays are perceived as a practical packaging material in the microwave use. They look nice and can be used as serving plates as such, also thanks to their pretty printing," says Laura Grigoletto, Product Manager at Comital Cofresco.
According to Antonio Mario Gullino, Commercial Director of the Professional Division Comital Cofresco, the food industry and trade are evaluating board trays as a possible alternative to aluminium and plastic trays. "In the food industry market, where packaging plays an important role, board trays are considered innovative and highly appreciated. Thanks to the good printability of the material, board trays make it possible to easily display the main features of brands, logos, pictures and product information, printed directly onto the packaging surface."
Renato Somekh, Sales Director of Stora Enso Italy, is upbeat about the board trays: "Big companies have already switched to board trays for some of their products, and many have also included that as a goal in their environmental reports. This has been reflected in the demand for Trayforma board, and if the current trend is any indication, the market potential is huge."
