STOCK COMMENTARY:

Is it just us, or is anyone else amazed at how little has changed since the Internet "bubble" burst?

Take for example the promises that "mainstream" brokerages made investors. Remember all the talk about how stock ratings would change. You know, "be more direct"? Well, here's a sample of recent ratings on Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO) by some, uh, "big" brokerages:

Downgrade from Overweight to Equal-weight Upgrade from Sector Perform to Sector Outperform Upgrade from Equal-weight to Overweight

We'll let you decide how "direct" or "usable" these "ratings" are to you.

Hold on a minute, what the $#%! do "Equal-Weight", "Sector Outperform", and "Neutral" really mean? Wait. On second thought, don't try to explain it to me.

I asked a friend of mine (who just so happens to be a "real world finance guy") what the deal is. More pointedly, I asked, "What is the deal with these people? Why don't they just say 'buy' or 'sell'?" The answer I got was (you could probably guess) exactly what I thought.

My friend said, "Dude, (he can call me that 'cause he's my friend) they can't say 'sell' because they'll lose banking business. They do say 'buy' all the time, though."

Sigh.

Have you ever seen the movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Great movie from 1977. If you don't know, the story goes something like this: A bunch of UFOs are seen around the world. A bunch of "normal" folks start having visions of a mountain that they feel is connected with a recent UFO sighting they've had. The "normal" folks all converge on "Devil's Tower" in Wyoming to witness, well, a "close encounter" with some aliens.

As the "normal" folks head to the mountain, they meet a concerted effort waged by the U.S. government to scare them away (and to protect the government's cover-up of the impending UFO landing). The U.S. government says there is a deadly disease people will catch if they get too close to the mountain and they must be evacuated. Folks are issued gas masks and scurried off to a secret containment area.

Here's "the rub": You, the viewer know there's no disease, and no need for gas masks, or evacuation. The government knows there's no disease. And, the SMALL group of "visionaries" who made the trek to Devil's Tower, Wyoming, know there's no disease. That truth is what the government (in the movie) is afraid folks will discover.

But 99% of the citizenry is scared and running like crazy. Most folks are very willing to be loaded into boxcars and get carted off to some "decontaminated" area. The scare-tactics and deceptions work on most folks.

In the stock market, I feel like we (StockPickReport) and our ratings are the truth that "mainstream wallstreet" is afraid of. "Mainstream wallstreet" spends so much money and effort obfuscating that there's no way to tell what they really mean. And, that's why it is so important to find an "objective" source of information.

This week, there will be plenty of news to follow. There will be a lot of "upgrades" and "downgrades" (hold the laughter down!) on key stocks. Yet, we hope you will continue to climb the mountain and fight the temptation to run when "mainstream wallstreet" tries to scare you away. You know that we do not guarantee any stock will go up or down -- hey, that's impossible. But, we do guarantee that we'll do our best to find stocks that meet criteria which indicate a particular move is around the corner.

For the record, our current rating on Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO) is, "Sell".
