Judge J. Phil Carlton to Speak on Shift in Business Regulation and Taxation from the Federal to State Governments


LOS ANGELES, Jan. 13, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- The monthly meeting of the Los Angeles chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI) will feature a presentation by J. Phil Carlton, former justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, on the increasingly powerful role of the 50 states in shaping national business policy. The dinner program will be held on Thursday, January 20, at 6 p.m. at the Jonathan Club, 545 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles.

J. Phil Carlton is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the State Capital Global Law Firm Group and the National Resource Center for State Laws & Regulations. He advises companies and trade associations about state government relations programs, litigation coordination, alternative dispute resolution and state incentive programs for business location. Carlton is a practicing attorney and has represented Fortune 500 companies in lawsuits filed by multi-state attorneys general. He is a popular conference speaker, often on the subject of federalism, and regular columnist for Chief Legal Executive magazine.

The Professional Development Program presentation will cover the financial reporting implications and practical business considerations of the American Jobs Creation Act. The Act includes new reporting provisions to the IRS and establishes penalties for non-compliance. Presenting will be Greg Hickey and Chip Lightfoot, both of the international accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC). Hickey leads PWC's West Region Industry Services Group and has more than 30 years of diversified tax and general business consulting experience. Lightfoot is a tax partner in PWC's Los Angles office and one of the firm's national internal leaders for American Jobs Creation Act implementation. The Professional Development Program presentation will start at 5 p.m. at the Jonathan Club.
