SOMERSET, N.J., Feb. 25, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- EMCORE Corporation (Nasdaq:EMKR), a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and wireless communications markets, today announced that it has released a 10-gigabit per second Receiver Optical Sub-assembly (ROSA) for long wavelength 10 Gigabit Ethernet, OC-192 SONET and 10 Gigabit Fibre Channel applications.
EMCORE's ROSA is an innovative and integrated LC or SC receptacle receiver for makers of optoelectronic modules operating in the 1310nm and 1550nm windows, assembled in XFP, XENPAK, X2, XPAK and proprietary form factors. This device provides extended temperature operation from -20 to +85 degrees Celsius. It includes an integrated lens assembly and provides a typical sensitivity level of -17 dBm. Fully compliant with RoHS (EU restriction of hazardous substances) requirements, the JEDEC-TO Can packaging provides an environmentally friendly, cost-effective solution for transceiver manufacturers to integrate into their 10-gigabit modules. EMCORE has already shipped more than 5,000 ROSA units, and anticipates a strong 10-gigabit market demand.
Brian Gibson, EMCORE's Director of Sales for fiber optic products, said, "EMCORE continues to invest in innovative products that provide near-term solutions for a wide range of industry datacom and telecom module vendors. EMCORE's new 10-gigabit ROSA units offer industry leading performance at an attractive price point."
EMCORE's 10-gigabit ROSA product strengthens its position in long wavelength components for 1310nm and 1550nm fiber optic applications. This announcement follows EMCORE's introduction of DFB and APD products for use in Passive Optical Networks (PON). The new ROSA adds to EMCORE's comprehensive offerings in 1310 FP, 1310 DFB, CATV lasers, photodiodes and integrated transceiver products.
A February 2005 press release by the Dell'Oro Group, a market research firm that specializes in strategic competitive analysis in the networking and telecommunications industries, discussing their fourth quarter 2004 high-end Ethernet switch market analysis, noted, "shipments of modular 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports grew in excess of 70 percent for the second quarter in a row." This growth far outpaced their estimated total Ethernet market growth rate. The Dell'Oro Group also stated, "(the) market for high-end modular Gigabit and modular 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches grew strongly despite a flat overall market." EMCORE has identified this as a key area for growth. Its new 10-gigabit ROSA product will address this segment.
