High availability and data replication best practices require near real-time transfer of business-critical and time-sensitive data through communication lines to remote locations. In many cases, existing WAN links are already operating at maximum capacity and cannot accommodate the additional loads that data replication traffic imposes. In addition, data replication traffic can adversely impact the performance of other business-critical applications and file sharing programs when running through the same communication lines. Unfortunately, simply upgrading bandwidth is often not the answer due to both cost and access to available lines. The solution is to compress and minimize data flow while maintaining integrity in the data.
