PRESS RELEASE

Exciting new eat-on-the-go packaging designs

Take-away food and eating-on-the-go reflect today's urban society, which is constantly on the move and bursting with individualism and diverse food cultures. It is also a major business and the market is demanding new packages to better meet consumer and trade preferences. The FoPDA 2005 packaging design competition invited young designers to show their talent and create innovative new packaging solutions on the Mobile Meals theme.

FoPDA (Food Packaging Design Awards) is an invitational competition for students of selected art and design universities and schools in Europe, Asia and the United States. The competition is jointly organized by Stora Enso and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland. Its purpose is to improve existing food-packaging solutions and to identify new applications for paperboard in food packaging. Innovativeness is the key criteria in the evaluation of entries. The winning designs must also be functional, cost-effective, environmentally friendly and suitable for commercial food packaging and production.

FoPDA 2005 prizes

In the FoPDA 2005 competition, the jury awarded the First Prize of EUR 3,000 to Andra¸ ¦apec from the University of Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts & Designs in Slovenia for his functional, convenient and aesthetic salad carton. The second prize of EUR 1,500 was awarded to Yael Mer, London Royal College of Art, for a specific take-away snack plate. She also shared the Third Prize of EUR 1,000 with Sipuliina Kinanen from Lahti Polytechnic Institute of Design, Finland.

Rethinking carton packaging

"We were looking for a new idea rather than a complete product," says Tapio Vapaasalo, Jury Chairman and Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. "Although the ten best entries were easy to select, the winner was outstanding. Each of the awarded entries used paperboard material in a fresh and exciting way."

For Stora Enso, the design competition is a way of connecting with the design world in order to create successful new packaging concepts based on the use of paperboard. The students are given a chance to experiment with paperboard and learn about its appeal and versatility in the packaging area - and win a generous prize.

The jury commendations

In its commendations, the FoPDA 2005 jury noted:

"The salad carton concept submitted by Andra¸ ¦apec shows how traditional carton packaging can be rethought. The idea is highly usable, almost ready to produce. The carton is spacious yet compact and simple to use. The concept focus is firmly on enjoying the food." (First Prize)

"The take-away snack plate from Yael Mer is an interesting and bold idea, but one that is also remarkably simple, with a clear functional shape and efficient locking mechanism. A novel concept that opens up new visions and possibilities for further development and a variety of uses." (Second Prize)

"The wine carton submitted by Yael Mer was notable in that its innovative folding construction provides a unique, rounded shape that can be made from a single blank. This is a luxury package that can be adapted to meet various applications." (Shared Third Prize)

"The creative, exciting and functional mobile meal concept from Sipuliina Kinanen makes the imagination soar. This idea can be adapted to many other uses as well." (Shared Third Prize)
