Companies team together to accelerate IMS application development
Espoo, Finland - Nokia and Ubiquity Software have agreed that Nokia will offer the Ubiquity SIP Application Server as part of the Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution.
Under a reseller agreement with Nokia, Ubiquity's programmable, JAVA-based, 3GPP-compliant SIP Application Server will be integrated into Nokia's IP Multimedia Subsystem solution. Ubiquity will also provide associated maintenance, training and professional services. As a result, Ubiquity's open service creation environment and runtime server will be available globally as part of Nokia's solution for providing richer multimedia communications.
Through a separate commercial arrangement, Nokia and Ubiquity have also jointly created an end-to-end SIP-enabled multimedia application, Media Push, which allows mobile users to subscribe to news and other types of media or information channels, and get selected content pushed to their terminal. The Media Push application has already been included in ongoing customer trials.
"Our co-operation with Ubiquity clearly shows the potential for creating exciting new SIP-based services using IMS," said Markku Verkama, General Manager, Networks, Nokia. "This will enable attractive and rich services, such as Media Push, for mobile consumers and enterprises alike. With Ubiquity, we are providing the open tools for creating SIP-based mobile applications that can be accessed through our standards-based IMS architecture. This further proves the openness and interoperability of the Nokia solution and our strong commitment to this technology."
"By using Ubiquity's open service creation environment based on SIP Servlets, Nokia can now offer mobile operators the ability to rapidly create and deploy differentiated IP-based services," said Ian McLaren, President and Chief Executive Officer at Ubiquity. "We look forward to providing a key technology that will shape today's mobile networks, enabling service providers to enjoy a best-of-breed solution that couples Nokia's comprehensive 3G and IP based networks with Ubiquity's leading-edge IMS-compliant SIP Application Server."
Nokia provides a complete, end-to-end solution for IMS-based multimedia, including the Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem solution with open ISC interface towards application servers, a SIP software development kit, and Series 60 devices supporting downloadable SIP clients. To date, Nokia has concluded commercial IMS contracts with eight mobile operators.

Notes to the Editor
The Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to establish IP communication sessions between terminals. The SIP session can then be used to carry any IP traffic, such as presence-enabled instant messaging, conferencing, multiplayer gaming or push-based content sharing. The Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem has a 3GPP-standardized IMS Service Control (ISC) interface to Ubiquity's SIP Application Server, thus allowing operators to rapidly and cost-efficiently expand their IMS-based application portfolio themselves or by connecting third-party applications to the system.
