ADVA Optical Networking Announces McDATA OPENready Certification to Support 10Gbit/s Connectivity Up to 190KM

MUNICH, Germany, July 06, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Interoperability between ADVA's Fiber Service Platform systems and McDATA's Intrepid 10000 Backbone Director results in industry's first 10G Fibre Channel extension between data centers over optical metro area networks (MANs)Mahwah/New Jersey, USA; Martinsried/Munich, Germany; July 6, 2005. ADVA Optical Networking today announced that it has passed OPENready qualification testing with McDATA Corporation, a leading provider of storage networking solutions. ADVA's Fiber Service Platform (FSP) has been tested and is now qualified as interoperable with McDATA's Intrepid(R) 10000 Backbone Director (i10K) for support of 10Gbit/s inter-switch links (ISLs) over distances of up to 190 kilometers at full bandwidth. By reducing the number of ISLs required between data centers for a given level of bandwidth, enterprises greatly reduce total cost and networking complexity when deploying the ADVA and McDATA products as a complete solution.

"Enterprise bandwidth demand continues to grow and always requires the highest effective throughput at the highest speed and lowest latency. Today, 10Gbit/s networking combined with WDM provides the truly best-of-breed solution," said Greg Schulz, senior analyst with The Evaluator Group. "ADVA's announcement of OPENReady status for support of 10Gbit/s ISLs demonstrates a partner ecosystem that enables enterprises to reconsider how to implement network resources to best meet their bandwidth needs."

Deploying ADVA's and McDATA's systems together offers enterprises a cost-effective and seamless solution in metropolitan and regional areas for even the most bandwidth-intensive applications, including business continuity, disaster recovery, remote storage on demand, and mainframe and server clustering. Enterprises can cut capital and operational expenses for networking because fewer ISLs are required. Six 10Gbit/s ISLs, for example, provide superior bandwidth performance to 40 2Gbit/s ISLs, and at significantly reduced equipment and maintenance costs.

Meanwhile, the ADVA FSP's support for multiple types of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) - eight-channel Coarse WDM (CWDM), 64-channel Dense WDM (DWDM) and hybrid CWDM/DWDM - enables enterprises to build a multi-data center infrastructure today, while preserving flexibility for future growth. Enterprises can start implementations with low-cost CWDM technology and then add 10Gbit/s ISLs between their McDATA i10K directors incrementally, as business needs dictate. Upgrades take place without service disruption. Installation costs are lower than for a DWDM-only solution, and customers save on training and sparing costs because CWDM and DWDM are provided via the same carrier-class ADVA FSP platform and channel card.

"Our Intrepid 10000 delivers the ultra-high availability and backbone functionality required by global enterprise customers, while the ADVA FSP delivers unmatched networking power and flexibility," said Doug Ingraham, vice president of hardware platforms for McDATA. "Using our systems together helps enterprise users build out a Global Enterprise Data Infrastructure that will reduce total costs through unmatched disaster recovery, and data protection while providing users access to geographically dispersed information at all times."

Added Brian P. McCann, chief marketing and strategy officer with ADVA, "Enterprise demand for 10Gbit/s transport over WDM is growing into mainstream deployment. The performance, simplicity, and cost benefits of 10G deployments have improved substantially and are helping drive industry adoption. Our expanded partnership solution is very important to meet our customers' evolving needs."

ADVA's FSP is a portfolio of optical networking products designed specifically for the delivery of high-speed services and network infrastructure in the metropolitan area. Employing leading technologies like CWDM, DWDM and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), the FSP systems enable up to 512 applications ranging from speeds of 8Mbit/s to 10Gbit/s to be transported over a single fiber pair up to 500 kilometers. The ADVA portfolio includes the FSP 150, FSP 1500, FSP 2000, FSP 3000 and FSP Management Suite.
