EVENT: Official groundbreaking of The Riverwalk At Penns Grove, a mixed-use retail, entertainment, dining, office and lodging complex in Penns Grove, Salem County, New Jersey. WHEN: Tuesday, July 19, 2005, 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. WHERE: Main Street (State Route 48) at the Delaware River in Penns Grove PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Riverwalk at Penns Grove 195,500 square-foot mixed-use waterfront development and part of a $65 million overall improvement initiative for Penns Grove. The groundbreaking culminates a five-year planning process to develop the 26-acre tract. The maritime-themed project will include a riverside promenade, a 40,000 square foot entertainment, banquet and conference center, a 4,500 square foot Italian restaurant, a 10,000 square foot seafood restaurant, a 60-room hotel, approximately 40 retail shops, office space, a microbrewery and a food court. A 900-foot pier will be reconstructed to provide dramatic views of the Delaware Memorial Bridge and will lead to an island and floating breakwater that will be used for a variety of public events. EVENT DESCRIPTION: Geroge Kearns, Managing Director of Fenwick Commons, LLC, and John Washington, Mayor of Penns Grove, will host the groundbreaking and dedication. They have invited local and regional government leaders to take part, along with military and veterans' leaders from southern New Jersey and Delaware, and business leaders from Salem County and the Boroughs of Penns Grove and Carney's Point. PROJECT BACKGROUND: Fenwick Commons, LLC, purchased the Riverwalk property in 2000 and worked with the Boroughs of Penns Grove and Carney's Point, Salem County and the States of New Jersey and Delaware to obtain the necessary permits, approvals and financing. The groundbreaking on July 19 will mark the commencement of construction on The Riverwalk's promenade and seawall, which is being constructed by the Borough of Penns Grove. Groundbreaking and construction of the retail, lodging and restaurant facilities will follow shortly thereafter. The public grand opening is scheduled for mid-2006. The Riverwalk at Penns Grove pays homage to the rich historical heritage of the area and is inspired by French's Hotel and picnic grounds, which stood on the site a century ago.
