BEA Systems Acquires Compoze Software, Inc., a Wayne, PA Company That Received Early-Stage Seed Capital From Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern PA

PHILADELPHIA, July 20, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- BEA Systems, Inc. yesterday announced that it had completed the acquisition of Compoze Software, Inc., a privately held company based in Wayne, PA that received early-stage seed capital from Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP) (www.sep.benfranklin.org). Headquartered in San Jose, CA, BEA said that the acquisition was part of the company's strategy to improve enterprise productivity and turn "frozen" IT assets into enterprise liquid assets.

BFTP/SEP -- which provides seed capital to promising early-stage and Pennsylvania-based technology firms to enable them to develop prototypes, build management teams, and win early customers -- invested $250,000 in Compoze between December 2001 and August 2003. Since its formation in 1982, BFTP/SEP has provided more than $110 million to over 1,400 regional enterprises through various funding means.

Compoze Software technologies, which are already integrated and will be sold in conjunction with BEA WebLogic Portal, offer portal customers direct, seamless, standards-based integration of email, calendaring, and task list functionality from Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes. Compoze Software also enables portal customers to easily integrate Instant Messaging applications from Yahoo!, Lotus Sametime and Microsoft Live Communication Server. In addition, Compoze Software provides clients with the ability to incorporate threaded discussions and group "white-boarding" to any portal. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

BEA WebLogic Portal and Compoze Software are integrated through an application programming interface and via the end-user-facing portal components known as portlets. All the portlets that expose the integration to end users are JSR-168-compliant and allow customers access to programming interfaces to create new custom collaborative portal applications.
