Chef Whalen has held various Executive Chef positions in the Greater Toronto Area including: The Chimo Hotel, Mississauga; The Oshawa Golf and Country Club; and The Bank of Montreal Institute for Learning. In1996, Chef Whalen accepted the position of Executive Chef for the Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville.
Chef Whalen's solid reputation within the culinary competition arena is well known around the world. He received a gold medal in 2000 at the VKD World Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany as Team Captain for Culinary Team Ontario; a gold medal in 2001 at the World Culinary Grand Prix in Glasgow, Scotland with Culinary Team Canada, where the team was also declared World Champions; and a grand gold medal, Best of Show Award and the "Silver Cup of France" presented by the Philanthropique Society of New York during the 126th Annual Salon of Culinary Arts in New York City.
Chosen by his peers, Chef Whalen was awarded the 2000 Chef of the Year for the Escoffier Society of Toronto as well as the 2000 and 2001 Chef of the Year for the Central Region of the Canadian Culinary Federation. He is also a member of the Epicurean World Master Chefs Society and Les Toques Blanches International, Toronto Chapter.
Chef Whalen was selected to be Team Captain for Culinary Team Canada 2001 - 2005, representing the Canadian Culinary Federation while competing in Singapore, Luxembourg, Chicago, Scotland and Germany.
