SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Sept. 27, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- How much is a human life worth? Can it be calculated in dollars, and who decides? These are questions no parent wishes to ask, but Tony Lebron had to face them and others when he decided to take the government to task for its role in robbing an infant of her future from the moment of her first breath, a story he recounts in his new book, What Price a Life? "No money in the world can compensate the denial of a full and rich life to a newborn child. This is the story of my daughter, Karina," Lebron says.
What Price a Life? is a moving book about a family wronged and their love and determination to hold those responsible for their mistakes. After a normal and healthy pregnancy, Lebron's wife went to the military base hospital to give birth to little Karina. What should have been a normal delivery went tragically wrong. According to Lebron, "an unscrupulous physician," rushing through the process, used forceps "in such a negligent and irresponsible way" that it forever damaged Karina's brain and body. The court case that followed serves as an example of how a parent's love can force a government to face its responsibility.
The book describes the extraordinary perseverance and devotion motivated by love that guided Karina's parents through the proceedings. With the help of their Texas attorneys, Michael Archuleta and Bill Whitehurst, they left no stone unturned in their quest to ensure that their daughter would be a guaranteed a life nurtured by excellent care with the maximum potential she could hope to attain. Lebron provides readers with all the details of the long and painful proceedings "to overcome the arguments and tricks government lawyers, experts and officers resorted to" while trying to deny Karina all of the necessary resources to provide her with proper, loving care.
