SAN DIMAS, Calif. and ANNAPOLIS, Md., Oct. 17, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Wavestream Corporation (www.wavestreamcorp.com), a manufacturer of a new generation of compact high-efficiency solid-state power amplifiers, today announced that it is supplying its PowerStream(tm) Deck Power Amplifier (DPA) to TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (Nasdaq:TSYS), a global leader in mission critical wireless communications. Wavestream's compact, modular DPA is being integrated into TCS' SwiftLink(r) DVM-90, a Ku-band, Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) deployable communications system, also known as the "Mongoose."
Designed for mission-sensitive, high-bandwidth field communications, TCS' SwiftLink DVM-90 is a man-portable broadband satellite flyaway terminal, which is used for commercial and military applications. TCS' SwiftLink deployable communications system, which incorporates Wavestream's PowerStream DPA, recently provided vital communications support in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, during hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The deployment of the DVM-90 provided much-needed voice services, enabling hurricane victims to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
"In developing TCS' DVM-90 VSAT flyaway terminal, we evaluated many different power amplifiers, all of which turned out to be too power hungry and difficult to install," said Steve Anspach, Vice President of Products and Solutions for TCS. "Wavestream's PowerStream 25-watt DPA solution saves us integration time and costs, while providing industry-leading efficiency that helps TCS to keep the terminal size and weight low. The DPA's compact, modular design enables shorter integration times for our DVM-90, allowing us to get these systems into mission-critical situations faster. Already we have seen this integration pay off with our involvement in hurricane Katrina relief efforts."
"The easy integration of our 25-watt PowerStream DPA into TCS' SwiftLink DVM-90 is a testament to the module's compact design and flexibility," said Gary Echo, Vice President of Business Development for Wavestream. "The superior efficiency and rugged construction of our DPA makes it ideally suited for a variety of military and commercial applications, and its modularity enables our customers to easily incorporate it into both new and existing products such as small aperture flyaway and mobile terminals. We are pleased to be working with TCS, an industry leader in the mission-critical communications space, and we look forward to continuing our support to them with current and future innovative amplifier solutions."
Ideal for embedded satellite communications applications such as comm-on-the-move and sub-meter flyaway systems, the PowerStream DPA is small, light and modular in a less than four pound, 1.5-inch high package. With 25 watts of RF power, the DPA utilizes Wavestream's Spatial Power Advantage(tm) to combine the outputs of many solid-state devices with very high efficiency, enabling expanded capability as well as further shrinking of compact, mobile satcom solutions.
Wavestream's products use spatial power combining to eliminate much of the loss seen in conventional solid-state power amplifiers and provide extremely high efficiency for both Ka and Ku-band communications. With plans to expand its technology beyond Ka and Ku-band frequencies, Wavestream is poised to enable additional advancements in communications and sensing systems. The company offers solutions for a range of commercial and military applications, including satellite links, radar and terrestrial applications.

About TCS' SwiftLink and DVM-90
TCS' SwiftLink DVM-90 is designed with the U.S. Department of Defense transformational needs in mind, allowing military units to deploy and communicate without specialized communications support. The easy-to-use auto-acquire and auto-configure system features simplify VSAT operation and shorten set-up time. The SwiftLink systems were designed to operate either as stand-alone systems, or, when combined with other TCS SwiftLink deployable communications systems, as broadband upgrades. SwiftLink products and services offer tactical operators and field command centers an end-to-end solution, with highly available, secure connectivity "reach-back" to the headquarters network, including Non-classified Internet Protocol Router (NIPRNET) and Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET).
TCS' VSAT modules are lightweight and compact, providing ease of transport. They are fully interoperable with iDirect Technologies Internet Protocol (IP) over VSAT implementation. The VSAT's sturdy shipping containers eliminate the need for field re-packaging. Additionally, TCS' DVM software-driven satellite acquisition and signal lock pointing reduce the need for special test equipment.
