NEW YORK, Oct. 19, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- As Hurricane Wilma approaches the Florida coast, Noah's Wish is warning residents to prepare for the worst, and remember to include pets in their emergency evacuation plans.
Noah's Wish is a not-for-profit organization that works exclusively to rescue and shelter animals in disasters. The group has been based in Slidell, Louisiana, caring for over 1,000 pets rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. "We are issuing an urgent appeal to Florida residents to learn from the lessons of Katrina and do not leave your pets behind," said Terri Crisp, the Founder and Director of Noah's Wish. "It's been seven weeks since Katrina hit and there are still over 700 animals in our care who have not been claimed by their owners. Noah's Wish is urging Florida residents to keep a close watch on the projected path of Wilma and if evacuation is needed, take precautions to keep their pets safe."
Noah's Wish offers the following guidelines to pet owners in Florida:
-- Do not leave pets behind when you evacuate as they may become
lost, injured or worse.
-- Keep in mind that shelters do not always allow pets, so it is
important to have an emergency plan for your animals before the
storm hits. Find a pet-friendly hotel in an area outside the
storm path or contact shelters and kennels in your area who may
provide tips on where to safely shelter with pets. Monitor local
television news and radio for information about shelters allowing
evacuees to bring pets.
-- Transport your animals in a safe and secure carrier. Always keep
your dogs on a collar and leash, even if they normally do not wear
one.
-- Bring a supply of pet food and don't forget to bring any
medications your pet needs.
If you have absolutely no other option but to leave your animals at
home if you evacuate, take steps to ensure their safety:
-- Leave a supply of food and water for several days.
-- Always make sure your pet has a collar on with up-to-date
identification. Include a contact number of a friend or family
member who can be reached in an area outside the disaster zone.
-- Leave a large notice on your front door to alert rescue teams
that there are animals in the house along with a contact number
where you can be reached.
-- Never leave an animal chained or confined to a dog run or in
a kennel. It is preferable to leave the animal loose, so they
have a chance to get to safety.
Noah's Wish will continue to closely monitor the powerful storm as it gets closer to the American coast. "While we do not expect Wilma to affect us here in Slidell, we have an emergency plan in place if the storm makes an unexpected turn," said Terri Crisp. "We will be standing by to offer assistance if the hurricane makes landfall and causes destruction in Florida."
