BELMONT, Mass., Jan. 10, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Kronos Advanced Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:KNOS) today announced that a team of senior researchers at the Disinfection Research Institute Sterilization Laboratory in Moscow found that the Kronos technology completely disinfected a room contaminated with strains of airborne bacteria spores including Staphylococcus aureus strain 906 (S. aureus) and Bacillus cereus strain 96 (B. cereus). The Laboratory is affiliated with the Federal Research Center in Moscow and its study will be published in the Magazine of Microbiology, Epidemiology and Immunology, a Russian peer-reviewed journal established in 1924. The journal focuses on vital problems of epidemiology, diagnostics and profilaxes of human infectious diseases.
The Kronos air purification device was placed in a contaminated room (30 m3 in size). The air circulation, movement and purification was provided by the Kronos technology and used in conjunction with a ventilator that was necessary to ensure the microorganism stayed alive during the testing.
Key results include:
-- 100% decontamination in room infected with Staphylococcus aureus strain 906 (S. aureus) and Bacillus cereus strain 96 (B. cereus); -- The room contaminated with S. aureus was 97.5% disinfected in 15 minutes and 100% disinfected in 45 minutes; and -- The room contaminated with B. cereus was 99.8% disinfected in 15 minutes and 100% disinfected in 60 minutes.
Dr. Mikhail Shandala, Director of the Disinfection Research Institute and a world-recognized Russian scientist who oversaw the study results noted, "Based on both the findings as well as the complete absence of noise in the disinfection process, it is clear that medical providers, and those concerned with preventing the spread of airborne disease, bacteria and infection, will want to look toward Kronos as a solution. The benefits of these devices will help medical organizations fight the spread of in-hospital infection, decrease hospital stays and reduce patient treatment costs."
The results of the findings come at a time when concern over the spread of airborne disease and infection is at an all-time high. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), as many as two million patients acquire infections in U.S. hospitals every year, resulting in 90,000 deaths annually. Consumers also cite hospital infection rates as one of the most important factors when choosing a hospital, outranking other factors such as reputation and proximity, according to a survey released by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Moscow study was conducted in compliance with the requirements of Guidance "Ultraviolet Radiation Application Room Air Disinfection," approved and implemented by the State Sanitation Physician of the Russian Federation, which requires that up to 99.9% air purification of the model microflora must be achieved in the first category clinical facilities.
