Telekom Austria Deploys ADVA Optical Networking's FSP 2000 to Offer Managed Storage Services

MAHWAH, N.J. and MARTINSRIED/MUNICH, Germany, March 21, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Telekom Austria is Europe's first network service provider to implement ADVA Optical Networking's Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 2000 to offer 4Gbit/s networking options to business customers for quick, flexible data transport services. Deployed in its network via Siemens Austria, Telekom Austria is currently involved in a managed-service project to operate a backup data center solution over a 50km long optical fiber connection for a backup data center for Sony DADC Austria AG.

The management of several million digital files and the provision of them to more than 50 service providers required an expansion of Sony DADC's storage capacity. In response, the company planned a new, future-proof storage network with SAN switches at two locations near Salzburg, Anif and Thalgau, and designed a network with two distinct connection paths. Based on ADVA's FSP 2000, Telekom Austria implemented the redundant solution with maximum availability, installing two separate 4G Fibre Channel (FC) links and a Gigabit Ethernet link, bringing them into operation across the two SAN locations.

Seamless integration of the ADVA and Siemens technologies was an important factor influencing Telekom Austria's decision. In addition, the ability to easily operate ADVA's Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) platform made it possible for Siemens Austria to implement the solution with Telekom Austria within just a few days.

"This solution was an amazing technological accomplishment because the project was delivered in a very tight timeframe," explained Dietmar Appeltauer, division head at Siemens Austria. "Thanks to excellent cooperation between ADVA Optical Networking and Telekom Austria, we were able to complete this project, which is unique in all of Europe, right on schedule and integrate it into the Telekom Austria AG network. This was convincing proof of our competence and technological leadership in the Metro WDM sector."

"The major advantage of the FSP 2000 lies in its scalability," commented Christian Cehovin, Territory Manager, Central and Eastern Europe for ADVA Optical Networking. "Our system is the only one currently on the market that allows network operators to upgrade flexibly from Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) to Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), thus allowing them to deliver more bandwidth to corporate customers as required."

The FSP 2000 first came onto the market in May 2001 and has already been successfully positioned with more than 3,000 systems sold. The extremely high reliability of the FSP 2000 platform and the system's support for all current transmission protocols make this platform the ideal solution for large-scale high-speed networks, for both carrier and enterprise applications.
