Pöyry awarded EUR 8.9 million hydropower contract in Laos


Pöyry's Energy business group has been commissioned by SouthEast Asia Energy Limited of Thailand to serve as independent engineer during the implementation of the Nam Ngum II hydropower scheme. The value of the assignment amounts to EUR 8.9 million.
 
The project site is located upstream of the existing Nam Ngum I hydropower scheme in Laos about 100 km north of the capital Vientiane. The Nam Ngum II scheme will include a 185 m high concrete faced rockfill dam and a 600 MW power station. The project will produce electricity for the Thai power grid and sell all the energy to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).
 
Pöyry's Energy business group is a major foreign market player in dam and hydropower design in South East Asia. It has been associated with the development of this project since 1994, and has also performed the technical studies enabling the developer to successfully complete the power purchase agreement with EGAT. The new hydropower plant will start supplying energy to the Thai grid in July 2010.
