Food Packaging Design Awards 2006 -
Design students faced the challenge of tamper-evident food packaging
 
As we want our foods safe, fresh and untouched, we need safe packages that we can trust. Apart from safe packaging materials, various tamper-evidence features are being increasingly used to guarantee the safety of consumers and to achieve a comfortable feeling of safety. This was the starting point for the FoPDA 2006 packaging design competition, which invited young designers to create innovative new solutions for tamper-evident food packaging.
 
FoPDA (Food Packaging Design Awards) is a worldwide invitational competition for students of selected art and design universities and schools. The competition is jointly organized by Stora Enso and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland. Its purpose is to improve existing food-packaging solutions and to identify new applications for paperboard in food packaging.
 
Safety and novelty were the key criteria in the evaluation of entries. Tamper-evidence was the main feature required in FoPDA 2006, meaning that is easy for the consumer to notice if the package has been tampered with. The winning designs also had to be functional, attractive, user-friendly and effective in terms of production, logistics and branding. "Strong international participation in FoPDA 2006 shows that packaging design and paperboard material are attractive topics among young designers. Although the competition generated a number of interesting new ideas, the winner was clearly outstanding," says Tapio Vapaasalo, Jury Chairman and Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.
 
First Prize of EUR 3,000 went to Russia
 
In the FoPDA 2006 competition, the international jury awarded the first prize of EUR 3,000 to Maria Stashenko and Helen Ryehagova from St. Petersburg State Academy of Art and Design, Russia, for their mechanical tamper-evidence solution. In its commendations, the jury noted: "Good concept with a playful idea and strong eye for details. The package gives a simple and clear message of how it functions; it is talking and understanding the customer at a deep emotional level that creates trust. Technical functionality works in production and the package is simple and economical to produce. The tamper-evidence feature can be applied to a variety of uses and package designs."
 
The second prize of EUR 1,500 was awarded to Juho Viironen, Lahti Institute of Design, Finland, for his futuristic idea of a package with lid that reacts when exposed to light. "A brave idea using new technology, a good example of active packaging which employs chemical indicators," the jury noted. Andree Huk, student at the Institute of Design at Umeå University, Sweden, earned the third prize of EUR 1,000 with his cylindrical cookie carton that has a longitudinal perforated opening.
 
Input into the development
 
The Food Packaging Design Awards provides Stora Enso a way of connecting with the design world. The fresh thinking of young designers gives valuable input into the development of successful new packaging concepts based on the use of paperboard. "From the point of view of educational institutes, it is good that the students have a chance to work on real business challenges. For example, designing a tamper-evident package is quite a challenging task as it very much requires technological problem-solving. This is something that we should stress more in packaging design training," says Tapio Vapaasalo.
