Terje Eidesmo, emgs president and CEO, said: 'This order marks a dramatic expansion of our business in response to increasing international demand for our Seabed Logging services from oil companies and contractors. A built-for-purpose vessel will enable us to provide the optimum service to our clients based on our growing experience with the benefits of Seabed Logging over the last four years. It will also provide us with the perfect platform to develop and trial further applications of the technology which we intend to introduce.'
Seabed Logging, now in use by more than 35 oil majors, independents and national oil companies around the world, is the marine controlled source electromagnetic method originated by Terje Eidesmo and colleague Svein Ellingsrud (emgs vice president, R&D) and commercialised by emgs. The most important application of seabed logging to date has been the reduction of exploration risk in deep water/frontier areas where the technique's ability to detect directly the presence of hydrocarbons has already saved oil companies millions of dollars in unnecessary drilling cost and revealed previously unsuspected reserves. The latest application of the technique, scanning for new prospects early in the exploration cycle, is generating a great deal of excitement in the industry.
The new emgs vessel will be designed to meet the most stringent international HSE standards and will also incorporate impressive facilities for the 50 or more crew on board. Features will include high-comfort cabins, a movie theatre, conference facilities, hospital ward, gym, workstations with broadband connection and a helicopter pad.
'Equipped with state-of-the-art survey instrumentation, onboard processing facilities and much improved equipment handling, the vessel will be an efficient and versatile platform for the deployment of our technology in the years ahead,' Erik Skogen, vice president of operations, explained. 'We believe our clients will appreciate the continuity and level of expertise that we can offer with our own trained full time staff.'
Taubåtkompaniet/BOA will manage the construction and retain ownership of the vessel which will be leased to emgs.
