Massive increase in broadband traffic - Telenor to launch new speeds

The speed increases apply to the three most popular subscriptions: Mini, Basis and Pluss. The new speeds (kbps) will be up to 1500/300 (previously 700/160), up to 2500/350 (previously 1500/300) and up to 4000/400 (previously 3000/350), respectively. Prices will be unchanged. For new customers the new speeds will apply from 1. November, existing customers will be moved over to new speeds by Christmas. Network capacity is also being increased, both locally and centrally.

"Recently, development in the broadband market has moved from an explosive increase in number of customers to an explosive increase in use by those who have broadband. You could say that it seems broadband customers have definitely seen how they can utilise broadband to the full," says Olav Sande, Director of Broadband and Telephony in Telenor Consumer.

Immediately after the launch of ADSL in 2000, customers were most concerned about uptime and coverage. From there, demand turned to capacity and price, while now we see that services and content, which require higher bandwidth, are more important. Downloading music, streaming movies and web-TV, e.g. football matches, are all content services that require high-speed Internet. Football represents the greatest content success on the Internet so far, and is a major cause for increasing traffic both regionally and centrally. For example, in Bergen there has been at times a doubling of traffic when the local football team play, especially during away matches.

"The speed customers receive is especially dependent on factors such as line quality and distance to the exchange, but in general we will increase speeds where justifiable. And if the customer's maximum speed is overtaken by the subscription class below, we reduce the price to the customer," says Sande.
