Memorial Hermann/HBU Wellness Center Predicts Lifestyle Coaches to be a Key Influence for a Healthy 2007

HOUSTON, Jan. 10, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Each year the nation's top ranked magazines reveal a coveted list of the most influential and newsworthy people. Celebrities, politicians and sports figures top the polls, but in households across America, a new luminary has emerged and is making a powerful and personally significant impact -- the lifestyle coach.

A lifestyle coach provides a unique health coaching service to assist individuals in taking action to increase their health. This novel approach combines strategies from life coaching with the scientific approach of behavior change to create an effective and efficient tool for individuals interested in improving their health. Regardless of specific health goals (weight loss, illness/pain management, stress reduction, etc.), a life coach trains in a supportive, non-judgmental manner.

Dr. Mark Stibich is a lifestyle coach in Houston, which according to Men's Fitness Magazine ranked as the 2005 "fattest city in the U.S." Houston has since dropped to the number 6 position in 2006 as a result of efforts from experts such as Stibich. In order for Houston to be removed from the top ten list completely, Stibich recommends five steps.

 1. Build it Slowly: You may have big goals for 2007, but lasting
change happens slowly. Break your resolution into 12 small steps
for each month. If you want to exercise more, make January about
creating 45 minutes, three times a week for exercise. February can
be about simple exercises like walking, running, or stretching.
Build your resolution throughout the year.
 2. Make it an Action: Don't resolve to "lose 40 pounds" or "exercise
more;" instead choose an action like "eat a salad 3 times a week."
You can succeed at your resolution every week, monitor progress
easily and you won't get discouraged.
 3. Make it Weekly: Design a resolution that involves weekly action.
Decide what you need to do each week and how often you need to do
it. Monitor yourself each week to determine your progress.
 4. Make it 100% Successful: Life is too short to set yourself up for
failure. Choose a resolution that you are certain you can
    accomplish.
 5. Celebrate: Celebrate your success in 2007. Fine wine, a massage, a
day hiking. You will make great progress in 2007 and you should
    take time to celebrate yourself.
