Northrop Grumman Showcases Tactical Decision-Making Tool at AMS 2007; Designed to Save Lives and Protect Property During Severe Weather

REDONDO BEACH, Calif., Jan. 12, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) will demonstrate an advanced environmental decision-making and information dissemination tool at the 87th American Meteorology Society Annual Meeting.

The annual meeting will be held Jan. 14-18 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Tx. Northrop Grumman's booth is No. 121.

The tool fuses multiple weather observations, imagery, and environmental data with geospatial data, creating an integrated source of information to help civilian and military authorities make rapid decisions that will protect lives and property during storms, hurricanes and other severe conditions. It will be demonstrated on the combined command center workstation and media briefing center.

"This tool incorporates state-of-the art technology designed to deliver tactical decision-making," said Leo Andreoli, director of Environmental Systems for Northrop Grumman's Space Technology sector. "It integrates data from multiple sources, eliminating the stove pipes that exist in current systems, and displays it in a user friendly format. The tool utilizes the company's expertise in space-based environmental monitoring and information technology to showcase a system with the potential to reduce the loss of life and property from natural disasters."

Consisting of a powerful, computer-based workstation and command center coupled with an interactive briefing display, the tool integrates data from satellites, airborne platforms, ground- and sea-based observation systems and displays it on a 20 million pixel display. The weather data can be merged with data on highways, evacuation centers, industrial infrastructure and hospitals.

The information is displayed at a command center for civilian or military authorities to consider when making tactical decisions about the best evacuation routes, or most convenient centers for people to gather or seek help during severe weather. In a "media ready" format, the information can be sent directly to local television, radio and emergency response networks.

Northrop Grumman is a leader in space-based environmental monitoring systems. The company built two of NASA's Earth Observing System research satellites, Aqua and Aura, and is the prime contractor for the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System.
