McObject's eXtremeDB In-Memory Database Hits the Highway in NEXIQ Technologies' Vehicle Telematics System
| Source: McObject LLC
ISSAQUAH, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 26, 2007 -- NEXIQ Technologies, a leading provider of
diagnostic and telematics products, solutions and services for the
commercial vehicle industry, has integrated McObject's eXtremeDB in-memory
embedded database system in the on-board telematics device in fleet
vehicles as part of NEXIQ's eTechnician™ Web-based remote monitoring and
diagnostics application.
Within the NEXIQ PRISM Telematics On-Board Unit (OBU), eXtremeDB runs on
Wind River Systems' VxWorks real-time operating system, providing real-time
storage and retrieval of geographical information systems (GIS) data.
eXtremeDB also manages critical device configuration information.
NEXIQ turned to eXtremeDB when new system features required a structured
way to save, retrieve, and search hierarchical data across power cycles,
Engineering Manager Sunil Reddy said.
"Our alternative to using a commercial database was writing our own
flat-file structure and a set of software classes to manage the file,"
Reddy said. "Incorporating McObject's proven eXtremeDB provides a much more
expandable solution. In the future, we can easily add new storage for
additional applications with varying data needs, without creating new file
structures and classes each time."
"eXtremeDB's role in NEXIQ's eTechnician illustrates how McObject's
commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) database supports both the new features
that are needed now, as well as capabilities that are sure to be added down
the road. Incorporating eXtremeDB rather than a 'homegrown' data management
solution addresses present as well as future challenges cost-effectively,"
McObject CEO and Co-founder Steve Graves said.
About eTechnician
eTechnician is a wireless Web-based system that enables remote monitoring
and diagnosis of on-the-road trucks and fleet vehicles. From the comfort of
the home office or service bay, a manager can access and control an entire
fleet's electronically controlled components, including engines,
transmissions, and braking systems. eTechnician's scalable ASP
infrastructure also allows the user to start with base-level services, then
add features, including 3rd party applications, as your savings accumulate.
The mobile system of eTechnician is a Telematics On-Board Unit called
PRISM. PRISM is an expandable custom hardware platform designed and
manufactured to reside on a wide variety of vehicles with different
component specifications and needs. PRISM is capable of running multiple
applications while acting as a vehicle data gateway for others, and is
charged with three main tasks: vehicle data processing, wireless
communication, and interfacing with the vehicle.
About eXtremeDB
Since eXtremeDB's launch in 2002, manufacturers have embedded McObject's
in-memory embedded database system in set-top boxes, mobile phones,
military/aerospace equipment, telecom and netcom gear, MP3 players,
industrial control and in many other devices and real-time software
applications.
With eXtremeDB, McObject offers a highly portable database management
system that meets the unique performance requirements and resource
constraints of intelligent, connected devices. eXtremeDB provides critical
data management features -- including transactions, concurrent access, High
Availability and a high-level data definition language -- while maintaining
a tiny code footprint (as little as 50K). As an in-memory database system
(IMDS), eXtremeDB delivers the real-time responsiveness demanded in many
device categories that cannot tolerate the response latency of on-disk
database systems.
eXtremeDB also provides sophisticated development capabilities, such as
support for complex data and varied query methods, a powerful debugging
environment including a self-diagnostic API that catches a wide range of
common programming errors before they slip into runtime code, and optional
XML and SQL interfaces.
