WASHINGTON, DC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 17, 2007 -- His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, renowned
spiritual leader from India, today offered his deep condolences to Dr.
Charles W. Steger, president of Virginia Tech, and to the families, friends
and students affected by yesterday's tragic events at the university.
"The Virginia Tech campus shootings are a wake-up call for all of us. We
need to immediately address the issue of stress among young people in
classrooms," said Sri Sri. "The entire Art of Living Foundation is here to
help the grieving families and students cope with the trauma of the
shocking incident. We pray for the departed souls and express our heartfelt
condolences to the bereaved families of the victims."
In his message, Sri Sri also invited all those who are deeply concerned
about this matter to join hands to nip the tendency of violence in the bud.
He said the human values of compassion, friendliness, cooperation and a
sense of belonging need to be nurtured to create a stress-free,
violence-free society.
Sri Sri was in Washington, DC last month where he launched his "Campaign
for a Stress-Free, Violence-Free America" at the John F. Kennedy Center for
Performing Arts on March 28. At that event he also unveiled his Universal
Declaration of Human Values, addressing the urgent need to rekindle human
values in all sectors of society, particularly among youth, in order to
achieve global peace and security and to foster harmony and understanding
among different peoples and cultures.
