SAN DIEGO, June 5, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) today announced that Carlos Ruiz Sacristan has joined the company's board of directors.
Ruiz, 57, currently is a partner of Proyectos Estrategicos Integrales, a Mexican investment-banking firm. Ruiz also serves on the board of directors of Southern Copper Corp., a copper producer in Mexico and Peru.
"With his extensive experience in Mexico's energy and finance sectors, Carlos Ruiz Sacristan will be an excellent addition to our board of directors," said Donald E. Felsinger, chairman and chief executive officer of Sempra Energy.
Sempra Energy has approximately $2 billion invested in Mexican assets, including a liquefied natural gas receipt terminal under development in Baja California, natural gas pipelines and distribution systems, and a power plant.
Prior to joining his current firm in 2001, Ruiz spent nearly six years serving as Mexico's Secretary of Communications and Transportation, where he oversaw the reshaping of the country's communications and transportation sectors to increase investment, broaden competition and improve infrastructure. Previously, Ruiz was general director of PEMEX, Mexico's largest public company, and, from 1988 to 1994, served in several federal government posts in Mexico, including Undersecretary for Budget.
From 1974 to 1988, Ruiz held positions of increasing responsibility at Banco de Mexico. His experience also includes service as a director on boards of several financial institutions and other public companies and commissions.
Ruiz has a bachelor's degree from Anahuac University in Mexico City and a master's degree in business administration from Northwestern University in Chicago.
Sempra Energy now has a total of 11 board members.
