Olga Pētersone, a chairperson of the Management Board for the public joint stock company Ventspils nafta, has undertaken the honourable responsibility to become a godmother of a newbuilding of JSC Ventspils nafta Group's associated company JSC Latvijas kuģniecība's fleet - the tanker Krišjānis Valdemārs launched today, on 3 September. The tanker named after the legendary initiator of naval school foundation in Latvia and Estonia is the fourth and the last of newbuildings ordered by JSC Latvijas kuģniecība at the Korean shipyard Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. “This is a very honourable and also extremely serious responsibility especially taking into account the name of the newbuilding that practically symbolizes the whole history and achievements of Latvian seafaring. I am ready to fulfill obligations of a godmother of the tanker Krišjānis Valdemārs as good as possible,” says O. Pētersone. Moral duty and responsibility of a ship's godmother is to introduce the ship's crew to the society and tell people about its household conditions, facilitate increase of cultural and spiritual level of crew members keeping up relations with them personally and by mail. According to traditions a godmother is appointed just once for the whole ship's life. O. Pētersone is a head of JSC Ventspils nafta, one of the largest concerns in Latvia, since 2004. Her profession is economist. Mrs. Pētersone has graduated from the University of Latvia and perfected her knowledge in different courses in Latvia and foreign countries, including strategic management courses for senior managers organized by the Munich Management Academy. Before starting to work in JSC Ventspils nafta she was the member of the Management Board and vice-president of the public joint stock company Gutta for several years, as well as chairperson of the Management Board for the Producers Association of Non-Alcoholic Beverages that includes leading Latvian companies of the industry. Since 2005 Mrs. Pētersone is the deputy chairperson of the Supervisory Board for JSC Latvijas kuģniecība. In 2007 JSC Latvijas kuģniecība has received from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. three medium-sized (37, 258 deadweight tonnage for each) two-hull ice-classed tankers meeting all marine safety requirements of the European Union and international conventions renewing and expanding the fleet of tankers and therefore ensuring increase both in JSC Latvijas kuģniecība, and JSC Ventspils nafta Group's value.
