North China Grid Company Limited Selects Infinera for Regional Network

Digital Optical Network to Support Beijing's Power Grid

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 4, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Infinera (Nasdaq:INFN) announced today that North China Grid Company (NCGC) Limited has selected Infinera for a next generation communication network providing connectivity for the power grid's operations throughout the North China region.

Based in Beijing, China, NCGC is one of the five regional power grids under the State Grid Corporation of China and provides power to more than 200 million people including the population of China's capital city, Beijing. Infinera was chosen by NCGC because NCGC believes that the Infinera DTN system supports its strategy of delivering reliable power supply to promote North China's economic and social development. Infinera partner Wuhan NEC supported the implementation of the Infinera network with sales, installation and testing services.

NCGC will use the Infinera network to monitor and improve the performance of its power grid, to support the grid's employees with an advanced information system, and to provide video applications including remote monitoring of facilities and remote employee education. NCGC selected Infinera's Digital Optical Networks architecture based on Infinera's monolithic large-scale photonic integrated circuits because high reliability is a critical factor for NCGC's highly complex, mission-critical network.

With 100 Gigabits/second of data capacity on each line card, the Infinera system makes it possible for NCGC to run capacity-intensive applications such as video on its network. Further, the Infinera system provides integrated GMPLS intelligence and SDH-like digital performance monitoring, fast digital protection, and sub-wavelength bandwidth management along with add/drop features, which enhance the flexibility, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of the network.

"Nothing in the market can match the level of reliability provided by the Infinera DTN," said Ms. Zhang Kaisheng, a member of the senior technical staff of the Optic Transmission Division of NCGC. "Moreover, Infinera's solution is simple and easy to use, such that we can manage it on our own without too many optical experts. All in all, the Infinera solution will enable NCGC to bridge the gap between its new next-generation IP backbone and many of its legacy low-speed applications. This frees us to reduce investment in SDH equipment and build a scalable infrastructure that can support future services."

"Operators are using Infinera's Digital Optical Networks based on large-scale photonic integration to add unrivalled flexibility, capacity and manageability to their networks," said Simon Naylor, Infinera's Vice President for the Asia Pacific region. "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with such a pivotal player in China's power industry, NCGC, and to help achieve its objectives through the deployment of the advanced features, functionality and superior economics of the Infinera DTN."
