European Investment Bank Protects Critical Information, Provides Secure Access With Enterasys Secure Networks Solution

ANDOVER, MA--(Marketwire - October 29, 2007) - Enterasys Networks® Inc., the Secure Networks Company™, announced today that European Investment Bank (EIB), the financing institution of the European Union, has deployed an Enterasys Secure Network to provide reliable, high-performance connectivity for more than 3,000 users and devices, while ensuring the highest levels of security and control for the bank's sensitive information. The network spans four buildings in Luxembourg, including the institution's headquarters, as well as remote offices throughout Europe and Africa.

EIB's infrastructure includes Enterasys Matrix™ X-Series secure routers in the core and data center, Matrix N-Series flow switches at the network edge, Enterasys SecureStack™ switches in remote offices, and RoamAbout® access points for wireless connectivity. Enterasys' NetSight® Management Suite provides unified, policy-based visibility and control of the wired and wireless infrastructure, while the Dragon® advanced security applications for intrusion detection/prevention (IDS/IPS) and Enterasys Network Access Control (NAC) ensure only the right users can access the right information from the right place at the right time.

"Enterasys is proud to help European Investment Bank achieve its critical business objectives: sustaining economic and social development; supporting small and medium-sized enterprises; and promoting sustainable, competitive and secure energy in its member countries," said Mike Fabiaschi, president and CEO of Enterasys. "Network security, reliability and performance are crucial to achieving the mission."

As the European Union's financing institution, EIB provides vital support to member countries. Network security, reliability and performance are crucial to achieving its mission. Employees and partners depend on EIB to provide on-demand access to critical information and financial transactions processing whenever and wherever required -- and it all must be secure. EIB's Enterasys Secure Network ensures the confidentiality, integrity and availability of network access for all of the bank's activities -- including its trading center and information warehouse.

Over the next several months EIB's Secure Networks infrastructure will play a vital role in the integration of new Sun Data Center Reference Implementation (DCRI) servers, on which most of the institution's applications will be hosted. The ability of Enterasys' standards-based solutions to integrate seamlessly with the new Sun data center cluster was essential. The Matrix X core router enabled EIB to implement a second backbone for testing and deployment of the Sun servers. This is one of the bank's key technical objectives for 2007, and the level of interoperability Enterasys provides has made the integration of multivendor solutions completely transparent. Enterasys continues to provide on-site support to EIB throughout this process.

As with all financial institutions, ensuring the highest levels of security and control of access to information is a priority for European Investment Bank. The bank must safeguard all the data it transmits or stores in its infrastructure, including client information, transaction details, identification and account numbers, so security is crucial. To protect its information, EIB leverages the security capabilities embedded in Enterasys hardware, while relying on the Dragon Security Suite to provide intrusion detection and prevention and network access control.

Four years ago EIB looked at the growing challenges facing the financial services industry and moved quickly to deploy Dragon IDS to identify and stop threats before they impact the infrastructure. EIB continuously works to improve its security posture, which led the bank to deploy Enterasys Network Access Control. In the last year, the network has faced several attacks, and in each case the threats were easily identified and automatically isolated by the Enterasys infrastructure.

Enterasys' NetSight Management Suite provides EIB with superior visibility and control, which is especially important because the bank manages its network (more than 16 sites) with just one full-time employee, one full-time contractor and a part-time contractor. With NetSight, EIB gains a global view that enables the team to manage and control the network easily so they have time to devote to strategic IT initiatives.

In the future, European Investment Bank expects to enhance its security posture by leveraging the features of 802.1x to move from device-based authentication to user-based authentication. In addition, the institution is evaluating Enterasys wireless switch controllers that combine the benefits of centralized WLAN control and management with the performance efficiencies of optimized traffic flow through intelligent local switching.

EIB's Enterasys Secure Network meets its goals for security, availability and control, and was cost-effective to deploy and is efficient to operate. EIB's initial Enterasys investment has been operating successfully for more than six years, which is why EIB continues to make Enterasys its networking partner.
