CDG Announces Strong Ecosystem to Support CDMA2000 in AWS Spectrum

A Year After the Issuance of AWS Licenses, License Holders and Manufacturers Find Plenty of CDMA Industry Support for Advanced Wireless Broadband Services

COSTA MESA, Calif., Nov. 12, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that several leading wireless technology companies will provide CDMA2000(r) devices, equipment and services for the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) frequency band. Less than a year after the FCC's issuance of licenses in the AWS band, license holders, in particular those that have previously deployed CDMA2000, are well positioned to meet the increasing demand for high-performance, advanced wireless broadband services by using the larger AWS bandwidth allocation.

"The CDG is pleased to see such strong commitment from the ecosystem to make products available for the AWS spectrum," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "AWS is an excellent frequency to showcase the high-quality voice, broadband Internet access, television, and advanced mobile data services the technology can deliver."

According to CTIA, the AWS spectrum will allow current and future service providers to offer wireless broadband services to millions of more Americans -- stimulating productivity, efficiency, mobility and security. Activity in the AWS band also benefits consumers and enterprises by further driving industry competition.

Several vendors will offer CDMA2000 products and services within the AWS band, including:

 * Infrastructure
   -- Airvana
   -- Airwalk
   -- Alcatel-Lucent
   -- Huawei
   -- Motorola
   -- Nortel
   -- ZTE
 * ASICs and Devices
   -- AnyData
   -- Kyocera Wireless
   -- LGE
   -- Motorola
   -- Nokia
   -- Qualcomm
   -- Samsung
   -- UTStarcom
   -- ZTE

"We are pleased to have such a strong level of support from the vendor community," remarked Egil Gronstad, director of technology planning, Cricket Communications. "Deploying the state-of-the-art CDMA2000 solution in the AWS band is a natural evolution of our very successful and rapidly growing mobile communications service."

Deploying any of the advanced technologies that are supported by the CDMA2000 ecosystem within the AWS frequency band will create a powerful and immediate value proposition for its license holders. CDMA2000 offers industry-leading user data throughputs (Mbps per user), reduced latencies, reduced jitter, greater radio link symmetry, advanced Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms and an increased capacity for voice communications. The technology also supports a full range of rich multimedia and delay sensitive services. It also provides an evolutionary roadmap that includes OFDMA-based technologies. Thus, AWS is ideal for high-speed broadband access to the Internet/VPN, carrier-grade VoIP services, video conferencing, push-to-talk, push-to-video, uploading of personal multimedia content (social networking), clipcasting, multicasting, television, and other advanced mobile data services.

AWS license holders and vendors have established a special interest group (SIG) within the CDG to focus on further developing the CDMA2000 ecosystem, including the procurement of devices for the AWS band. For more information contact the CDG by emailing to cdg@cdg.org.
