WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - January 16, 2008) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) presented Energy Systems Group (ESG) with a 2007 Project of the Year
Award for its Iris Glen Landfill Gas to Energy Project. The award was
presented at EPA's 11th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP)
Conference and Project Expo on January 9, 2008 in Washington, DC.
Natural gas quality landfill gas (LFG) energy projects are typically
limited to landfills with significant amounts of gas, but not in Johnson
City, Tennessee. There, Energy Systems Group has successfully transformed a
relatively low landfill gas (LFG) flow into an award-winning pipeline
quality LFG energy project. The Iris Glen Landfill Gas to Energy Project's
innovation, extensive outreach, and success earned it recognition as a 2007
LMOP Project of the Year.
An innovative collaboration between the City of Johnson City, TN and Energy
Systems Group, the landfill project employs inventive use of landfill gas
that conserves natural resources, reduces greenhouse gases, and provides a
long-term revenue source for the City of Johnson City.
ESG engineered and built the landfill gas processing system to convert raw
low BTU gas to clean high BTU gas as a direct replacement for natural gas
that is then supplied to the Mountain Home Energy Center (MHEC). The MHEC
is a combined heat and power plant that supplies power and chilled water to
a Veterans Administration hospital, the East Tennessee State University
Medical School, and the city's civic center.
The Iris Glen Landfill Gas to Energy Facility eliminates the equivalent
amount of emissions as would be saved by removing 34,000 cars from the
road, or planting 49,000 acres of trees, or heating over 11,000 homes.
"We are extremely proud of this investment and pleased to deliver all the
benefits of such an environmentally responsible project," commented Jim
Adams, President of Energy Systems Group. "ESG continually develops
innovative projects that promote energy conservation while providing
significant financial benefits to the communities we serve."
Each year, EPA recognizes the latest accomplishments of landfill methane
partners who have reduced emissions of methane and created renewable
energy. The Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) acknowledges its
Partners for excellence in innovation and creativity, success in promoting
project development, and achieving environmental and economic benefits.
