Huawei Technologies Elected to 3G Americas Board of Governors

BELLEVUE, WA--(Marketwire - April 2, 2008) - 3G Americas today announces that Huawei Technologies, an industry leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, is the newest member of its Board of Governors, effective March 2008. Huawei joins a distinguished Board, currently comprised of sixteen leading operators and manufacturers, working together to develop the expansive wireless ecosystem of networks, devices, and applications enabled by the GSM family of technologies including LTE.

Chris Pearson, President of 3G Americas, welcomed Huawei to the 3G Americas Board and explained their election. "Huawei currently provides infrastructure solutions to 3G Americas members Telefónica Móviles and Telcel/America Móvil and continues to expand their reach in the Americas region. Huawei's market success combined with their expertise in mobile and IP networks as well as forthcoming technologies such as LTE will create a mutually beneficial relationship with the member companies of 3G Americas."

The GSM family of technologies has been the wireless market leader in the Americas region for more than three years. As of February 2008, GSM/UMTS represents 63% of the wireless market in this region with 413 million subscriptions. In addition to HSDPA deployments throughout Canada and the United States, there are currently deployments of UMTS/HSDPA on 19 networks in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, and this count increases almost weekly. Facilitated by organizations such as 3G Americas, the GSM ecosystem is well established and capable of rapid deployment and successful implementation of advanced wireless services in the Americas region.

"As a leading provider of customized network solutions for operators, we are pleased to join 3G Americas in promoting the GSM evolution to UMTS/HSPA and beyond to LTE for the benefit of operators and subscribers in the Americas," stated Charlie Chen, Sr. Vice President, Huawei (USA). He continued, "Our presence in the Americas region has been growing steadily for the past few years. We value the opportunity to work alongside the top operators and manufacturers in this region as we develop and promote our HSPA and LTE solutions."
