China Telecom Americas Expands Global Footprint With Cisco IP NGN

Leading Service Provider Offering More Converged Data, Voice and Media Services to Business Customers

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - June 25, 2008) - Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) today announced that China Telecom Americas is greatly expanding its network based on the Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture. Because it builds its services with Cisco equipment and technologies, China Telecom Americas has become a Cisco Powered Program member with service designations in Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based IP virtual private network (VPN) and Carrier Ethernet.

From basic dedicated access to multipoint, IP-based VPNs, China Telecom Americas builds customized solutions that meet its customers' needs for speed, security, flexibility and scalability. China Telecom Americas offers a full suite of products and value-added services, including IP Access, MPLS VPN, IP Leased Circuit, managed customer premise equipment and comprehensive network monitoring. In addition, China Telecom Americas is a leading provider of data services in China to multinational customers throughout the Americas.

"The rate of change placed on businesses today is accelerating, requiring increased global collaboration through unified communications and immediate, highly secure access to business applications," said Donald Tan, China Telecom Americas president. "Giving users access to critical applications anytime, anywhere demands a sophisticated, intelligent real-time network infrastructure. Cisco's vision for the 'Network as the Platform' for all transactions is well aligned with our own, and we look forward to continuing to work closely to help meet our customers' growing network and service needs."

China Telecom Americas currently operates multiple super points of presence (PoPs) that aggregate traffic across North America. China Telecom America's backbone expansion includes three new Cisco® CRS-1 Carrier Routing Systems, the core platform for the Cisco IP NGN architecture. The Cisco CRS-1 complements the existing Cisco XR 12000 Series Routers for network core infrastructure, which ties into the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) for time-division multiplexing (TDM) service aggregation. The Cisco 15454 MSPP is used in the role of international TDM gateway platform supporting synchronous optical network (SONET) for traffic bound for CTA's U.S. markets and supporting synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) for traffic bound for CTA's China and other international markets.

China Telecom Americas offers services in the United States and Canada, and is expanding into South America. The services are designed to expand the MPLS-based IP VPN access reach via ChinaNet and CN2, a next-generation carrier network.

"With the expansion and enhancement of its North American backbone, China Telecom Americas is better able to provide leading IP-enabled applications and processes to its growing customer base in the Americas," said Vic Northrup, Cisco vice president of United States sales.
