GALVESTON, Texas, Oct. 2, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Although four campuses will remain closed for clean-up and restoration, students are encouraged to return to class in Galveston Independent School District next Tuesday, Oct. 7. It is expected that electricity will be restored to all GISD schools by the end of the week. The district plans to hold classes at Morgan, Oppe, Parker and Rosenberg Elementary schools, Weise Middle School, Austin Magnet School, Ball High school and San Jacinto school. Although Ball High and San Jacinto (Disciplinary Alternative Education Program/Accelerated Instruction) will open for class, additional repairs will be ongoing.
All GISD staff are requested to report to work on Friday, Oct. 3, unless notified to return earlier. Staff members should have received an e-mail update with reporting instructions.
Four schools will not reopen at this time due to damage from Hurricane Ike; they include Burnet and Scott Elementary, Crenshaw Elementary/Middle and Central Middle schools. Students who were attending the schools that suffered more damage from Hurricane Ike will attend the schools as noted: Burnet Elementary students will go to Parker Elementary; Scott Elementary students will go to Morgan Elementary; Central Middle students will attend Weis Middle; and Crenshaw Elementary/Middle students from Bolivar should call Terri Watkins at 409-766-5141 for a school assignment for the school closest to their temporary housing.
During the first two weeks back and through Oct. 17, policies will be adjusted: all students will be eligible for the free breakfast and lunch program; and mandatory school uniform policies will be relaxed. The uniform plan will be re-evaluated at the end of that period.
School hours will be 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. for elementary; 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. for middle; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Austin Magnet School; and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for Ball High School.
