Over Fifty Percent of Campus and District IT Employees Spend More Than Ten Hours a Week Managing Network Access
High Demand for Varying Levels of Web Access Presents Challenges for IT to Meet Instructor and Administrator Requests

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - October 27, 2008) - Educational institutions are struggling to
manage teachers' and administrators' unique network preferences, spending
hours every week adjusting Internet entry levels to allow certain staff
access to Web-based tools and information to enhance lesson planning,
research and in-class training.
A new survey of 200 education IT professionals highlights that 60% of staff
responsible for network upkeep spend over ten hours per week granting
access requests, while 94% spend one hour or more. This time-consuming
management task includes manually changing entry controls for campus
employees that need to provisionally utilize Internet sites, which are
normally blocked to avoid unmonitored student use. This process is a drain
on IT staff's time, as it could be allocated elsewhere and the potential
for slow turn around can leave teachers without the ability to use the
benefits of the Web when needed.
Survey results show that 29% of respondents selected their current Web
filtering solution based on its flexibility, and noted this feature as the
number one influencer. To cut down on IT time, schools need Internet
filtering solutions with adjustable profiles to grant users access
dependent on their position in the district. These profiles can be set up
in advance, ensuring IT resources are not overwhelmed with a multitude of
change requests. This is critical to providing teachers with what they
need, while remaining CIPA-compliant.
