'Suicide by Cop' Prevented as Police Use TASER Device On Connecticut Teen

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Oct. 28, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), the market leader in advanced electronic control devices (ECDs) issued the following NEWS Alert:

According to an article in the October 27, 2008 edition of the Middletown Press entitled, "Cromwell teen allegedly attempts 'suicide by cop'," Cromwell (Connecticut) police used a TASER ECD to disarm a distraught 17-year-old student who had pointed a gun at two Cromwell (Connecticut) police officers. Previously, the teen had threatened his family with a large kitchen knife then ran off to the high school with a "semi-automatic pistol." Once police arrived on the scene, the teen turned the gun on the officers. Another officer arrived and was able to position himself behind the youth deploying his TASER(r) ECD to stop the teen from further endangering himself or the officers.

According to article, police officials stated that once the youth pointed the gun at the officers, they would have been justified in using "deadly physical force" to defend themselves.

Once the teen was in police custody the article states that the youth told officers he was attempting to commit "suicide by cop" in which police would be forced to use lethal force.
