Houston Tea Party Society Announces Independence Day Weekend Protest July 3rd at Discovery Green

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - June 1, 2009) - The Houston Tea Party Society announced today that it is holding its third protest at Discovery Green on July 3rd from 5PM - 8PM. Taxpayers from across Houston and Southeast Texas will gather in downtown Houston at Discovery Green to protest the unprecedented expansion of government and excessive borrowing and spending in Washington. This third "Tea Party" event is being held on Independence Day weekend to symbolize the significance of the founding fathers' signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, declaring themselves free from an oppressive government that did not represent them.

"The Tax Day Tea Party on April 15th was a stunning success and we expect this next Tea Party event to continue the momentum we've created," said lead Tea Party organizer Felicia Cravens. "Attendance topped our best estimates -- that, together with the fact that 400 new volunteers signed up to work on the upcoming July 3rd event, proves the movement is growing."

The second Houston Tea Party event was held at Jones Plaza on April 15th, the day most Americans file their tax returns. Organizers counted over 11,000 protesters.

The Houston Tea Party Society is a non-partisan, grass-roots organization of citizen taxpayers demanding the roll-back of unparalleled spending and ever-expanding federal government control of private industry that threatens to erode our freedoms and put our children and grandchildren in debt for decades. The Houston Tea Party website is located at http://houstontps.org.

"We are using the principles of the founding fathers to fight for every American's freedom," said Tea Party organizer Felicia Cravens. "We're not defined by party politics -- in fact, it is Washington politics that brought us here. 'We the people' want Washington to start listening -- and not only to the special interests. If they don't listen to us, we will find new leaders."

Speakers at the July 3rd event will include: Steven Crowder, winner of the Nationwide "So you Think You're Funny" MySpace Comedy Contest, Termite Watkins, former professional boxer and coach of the first ever Iraqi Olympic Boxing team, among others.

Houston is one of at least 350 American cities and communities where hundreds of thousands will protest on the July 4th weekend.

Discovery Green, a 12 acre park is located in downtown Houston across Avenida de las Americas from the George R. Brown Convention Center.
